A very special bistable rotary solenoid is the so called "SNAPPER" solenoid from GeePlus - probably the fastest
rotary solenoid in the world.
It was designed for high speed sorting, optical shutter, locking, or other applications. The angle of the SNAPPER rotary actuator is limited,
the standard version is designed for 15°. Smaller angles are possible, but due to tooling cost involved this option makes sense only for
quantities >1,000pcs. per year.
It can be optimised for high speed or high torque.

The operating characteristic is illustrated for a part with operating angle of 9° nominal. The time to start (TTS) is the time taken to build up a strong enough field to start motion, this is a combination of electrical time constant to build up the coil current, and the time to accelerate through the first 1.5° of motion. After that time the paperflow is ambiguous. After the time TTE the selector has passed the 7.5° point and returns into the unambiguous state of selection (at the other end); a safety zone for for bounce back has to be considered.
The last picture shows a typical paper transporting and selector mechanism with two diverter gates. The paper flow goes form right to left side; the first diverter gate is switched to pass through, the second to divert.
